How to help our children to admit their mistake?

A Wimpy Kid's mom diary:

03-OCT-2013

After turn SAHM for about 2 yrs, I learn that it’s for my own good not to address everything that I hear or I see even sometimes I am so itch to open my mouth. This is very effective in avoiding argument.

Tonite during dinner, Ian said he just took his LINUS today. Then he added, it’s held on Sept. (Sept? Now we are already in Oct) I believe it was just a slip of tongue, I better kept quite. However, his uncle pointed this out. He denied he ever say this, as usual! They argued over this and I interfered just to prove to him that I heard it too. However, his state of denial just as firm as his stubbornness. The most irritate things was, he cried out loud when 3 of us tried to prove him that he indeed say so.

Ended up? I’m the one who flared up & smacked on the table to stop him. Still, he stood firm on himself, denied that he ever said so. Ya, sometimes I just avoid having this type of argument with him, more so when I’m alone with him. I couldn’t find another witness to prove him wrong. Even though I can get one, it appears useless as he will still stubbornly deny it. Sometimes, I have to refrain myself on pointing out his mistake especially a mere of slip of tongue or something that is less important.

Well, I did googled on how to handle this – to encourage him to admit his mistake. Talked to him calmly (I have to pretend so) in order to make him feel comfortable and keep telling him it doesn’t matter as we, human, make mistakes. Just the matter of admit it and not to repeat it. It seems hard for him to accept that he make a mistake. It’s even harder for him to pop the word ‘sorry’ out from his mouth. Whenever I mentioned about apologized, he will cry out loud.

Most of the time, he cried so loud and I can't waited to get this over. And, believe it or not? It seldom gets OVER. Finally, after he cooled down, and I can’t wait to wrap this up, he will tell me with his very soft tone – I didn’t say that.  >.<

I normally went mute as I’d used up all the words that I can from my word bank. If you want to know whether I manage to handle this, I have to admit that I FAIL to. I can’t find another way, so far. I have to keep battle with his stubbornness, as long as he is still under my care. Or until one day, he learned from it.

For you sake, here are some tips from the parenting experts
(extract & edited from http://www.parent4success.com/)

- Help our children understand that everyone makes mistakes and we
don’t expect them to be perfect
- React to a mistake with a determination to help our child learn
from it
- Wait for our child to calm down before discussing the mistake.
- Encourage our child to admit to a mistake, and to take responsibility for it rather than blaming others.
- Make sure that we stick to the one mistake, rather than bringing up any similar mistakes made in the past.
- Encourage our child to say sorry and discuss ways of doing this in person if possible or in a letter.
- A good apology includes: a description of what happened, recognition of the hurt or damage done, accepting responsibility for the situation, admitting their role in the incident, expressing regret for what happened, asking forgiveness, reassurance that it won’t happen again and how they would like to make up for the hurt or damage.
- Overcome the temptation to rescue our child from the consequences of a mistake. And help them to realise the consequences of their actions. (Such as children not wanting to play with them, people being cross, punishments at school etc.).

Jesus is God's CCTV

One morning, when our car passed by the guard house, the girls saw a CCTV in close range, and are smart enough to recognize the device. Since the topic of CCTV being brought up, I have to say something.

"Hmm.... do you know that your school also has CCTV? Your school's CCTV is smaller and not easy to spot. So, try not to do funny things inside your school compound. Your teachers can easily know what you are doing or what you say."

The most mischievious one sure has something to say. "When I'm outside, there will be no more CCTV." (No wonder she always trying to do mischief out of my sight)
Her statement really put me to think......think.... Out of sudden, my savior appeared. "Do you think there is no CCTV when you are outside hah?" "Jesus is God's CCTV. Don't try to do funny thing. God will knows."

I almost want to shout out, THANK YOU, JIA EN!!

10 FREE WAYS TO BRING MORE ENERGY TO YOUR LIFE

While cleaning up my bookshelf, I came across Jan issue of Women Weekly. I stopped the cleaning and sunk myself into my cosy coach. Browsing through old magazines is something fun, for me.

Old magazines always have sentimental value & I tend to keep them as long as I can; until I have to clear up the space for newer issues. Normally, I will tear out the artiles I want and keep them in a ring file before I send the magazines for recycling.

I summarized below from Jan issue and add in some of my personal tips -- 10 FREE WAYS TO BRING MORE ENERGY TO YOUR LIFE

1. Dress up!
when you looks good, smell good; you definitely feel good. Also, nicely dressed can lift your confidence level.

(Lynn's tips: Looks good and smell good doesn't need to be costly. Keep your hair clean and neat, wear clothes and perfumes according to your age as well as your job is the most important after all. )

2. Exercise
Exercise improves your blood circulation and higher inflow of oxygen will make you feel less fatigue but more alert. And, you will looks good as your muscles are firmer and healthier.

(Lynn's exercise tips: Try to workout with the aid of video. I personally found Cheng Door Yin is the best instructors among all. You will see your thighs and arms getting firmer after few sessions of workout. You may not need to follow through the whole session. Stop whenever you feel tired. Slowly increase the time by 2 mins in every next sessions.

3. Sleep well
It's very important to have a deep good night sleep. Your body recharge during your sleep. If the process doesn't goes well, you may have hard time the next day.

(Lynn's tips: have a cup of warm honey before your sleep. Make sure the room is completely dark and temperature is appropriate)

4. Reboot your digestive system
When your digestive system is functioning well, its more likely you get most of the nutrient from the food that you are eating.

(Lynn's tips: Once a while, have pure yogurt, fruits and nuts for breakfast or snack. Eating enough of fiber, less processed food and enough rest is good for your bowel movement.)

5. Fuel up
Try to includes high nutrient food in your meal or snack. Opt for nuts or fruits to replace unhealthy food.

6. Stay calm
Negative feelings is bad for your health. Try to control your breath when you feel stressed, anxious, worry or angry.

(Lynn's tips: Take deep breath whenever bad feeling crops up. I have to deal with anger a lot as I have short temper. Divert your attention, try to do some other thing, take a cup of drink or just as simple as walk away can instantly cool yourself down)

7. Grow some plants
House plants like bamboo palms can bring vibrant chi into your house.

(Lynn's tips: Spend some time to look at your green plants can help to soothe your tired eyes as well as to feel the joy of life)

8. Spend time with happy people
Try to mix with positive thinking crowd. They will inspire you, support you and make you feel good.

9. Choose colour
Bring bright vibrant colour to your living space, including your screen saver!

10. Keep hydrated
Having yourself hydrated is an ideal way to push you through the day.

Introduce religious education to your kids.

First of all, I'm trying to be frank that I'm not in the position to discuss how to guide your kids on formal religious teaching, but trying to share my own experience as a medium in introducing religious teaching to be an important part of their personal development.

It's all God's will to have a church mentor stayed few doors away from me and with her passionate explanation, I let my kids attend Sat school. Of course in the early stage, it is more for social opportunities than for spiritual guidance. Every session is packed with fun-filled activities and child-friendly religious discussions.Sometimes, they do have outing for older children (young adult).

The idea here is not to discuss which religion is better to your kids, but to talk about expose your kids as early as possible to spirituality, faith, hope, and morality. It doesn't matter if you're a free thinker or not. The main point is to raise a compassionate child through religious teaching.

If we as a parent doesn't play a part to introduce them to any religious teaching, they most likely will be living religion-free lives in later years. Most likely they will become self-centered, more fragile to the fast-moving world as well as having higher chance to suffer depression. Having a religious background is actually to provide them a sense of self-valued, hope and faith before they have to face the challenging world.

Ladies, take a break!

No matter you are a stay at home mom or working mom, allowing yourself a reasonable break is crucial. Many of us may find it difficult to break away from house chores, or packed daily routines. Some working mom may say not easy to take leave, or to get a back fill.

Is taking a break out of your routine important? Some may say, my job doesn't require much physical movement, or a home maker doesn't means cleaning and washing all the time. Well, I used to think this way. However, day by day, you feel tired, wear out or bad mood. You are longing for me-time. You start recalling your good old days, as free as a bird. Here are signs that you need a me-time break very much.

To love yourself like how you treasure your job, or your family; give yourself a reasonable time off. Pampered yourself once a while is very mood-lifting. There are numerous ways to rejuvenate, depends on which is more effective; as individual results may vary. (a standard disclaimer huh)

Having a quality break doesn't need to be costly. Here are some ideas for consideration.

1. Arranging a day out with your BFF. No worry on what to say, what to bring along or to deal with tantrum. Just drop in to any shop that you like to. Spend your time there as long as you like. I normally buy clothes, accessories or nail polish during this time.

2. If you are longing for a physical theraphy, go for a massage/spa, then head for afternoon tea. Normally, I'll buy myself a book/magazine, then look for a place that I'd like to hang out for the next few hours. Spend your afternoon in ambience environment, sipping your coffee while reading is very relaxing.

3. Wanna have a break with minimal cost? Why not, you can still have your afternoon tea at outlets that offer tea break promotion. And know what, most of them keep the latest magazines on their rack! Like, Seasons, SDS....

4. Go for hair cut and hair treatment not only relaxing but makes you will feel good at least for the rest of the week.

5. For certain people, day off doesn't mean outing day. If you perfer to rest at home, please make sure no housework. You may spend your day on grooming (doing your own hair spa, DIY medi or pedicure), reading or even sleeping. This shall be the best way to recharge yourself.

6. For those who enjoy physical workout, you may plan to have a bowling, badminton games, hiking, swimming or go to gym. Sweating will make you feel fresh as well as to generate positive chi.

I usually have my me-time after kids bed time or when they went off for tuition. This is the time I recharge myself as well as to plan out what I need to do the next day, including my tuition lesson plan.

Phuket 5D5N travel tips

First of all, if you don't enjoy beaches, sunshine or boating; try not to put Phuket in your travel list. If you have seasick, or hate sun tan; then you better choose to go other places.

I spent my unforgettable 5D5N in Phuket this Raya holiday. I'd enjoy myself to the fullest throughout the trip, and attempt to record anything that I can to be your complete travel guide to Phuket.

Before travelling :
1. check weather forecast few days before your travel dates. If it is expected to rain, remember to bring along umbrella or even disposable raincoat.
2. as expected, your hat, sunscreen & sunglasses.
3. a scarf or cardigan as well as long dress. For temple dress code, cold winds in the boat or even as a protection from harsh sunlight.
4. Leave your jeans or wedges behind. Wear slippers as well as tee shirts and shorts.

DAY 1 : (raining heavily)

Departed Sg airport and reached Phuket at 11am, in 1hr 40m time. Due to different time zone, we save 1hr. We put up in Loveli Boutique Guest House in Patong thru out our stay in Phuket. Since we are staying 5N there, we get a complimentary upgrade from superior to deluxe. They provides free pick-up from airport. It took us about an hour to reach Patong.

The owner of this guest house is also running a travel company. It's just at the ground floor of the building. To us, Andrew is the most attentive travel agent that we've ever met. He replied email real fast. If you look this up in Trip Advisor, you will see this guest house is highly recommended by many.

http://www.loveliguesthousephuket.com/room.html (make yr booking online and pay only 10% as deposit)
http://www.phukettravelcompany.com/ (arrange your trip after you check-in, as certain trip is very much depending on weather)

@It was raining heavily the day we arrived. Soi Banzaan turned into a river. Luckily the water subsided in 1-2 hours time.

After check-in, we planned our trips with Andrew. Get the itinerary set, payment done; there we go. We spent 4mins walked down the street to banzaan (market) to fill our stomach.

Dish 1: kuey teow ladna. Quite nice. Especially the kuey teow. When I chewed, my mouth was full with the rice fragrance.

Dish 2 : fried prawns. Nice too. Both dish 1 & dish 2 cost 170.-

Dish 3: Green curry chicken. 120.-

Here is the place we had our meal.

Afternoon Activity: Walking around to familiarize with the surrounding. Buy bottled mineral water from Jungceylon. (I usually buy bottled water during my trip as it is more convenient and cleaner)

Stalls outside Jungceylon selling nice (but expensive) souvenirs.
Nice floral hairclips.

Nite activity: Simon Carbaret (90mins) 600 baht per pax.

Pretty sexy lady boy posing after the show.

**If you do not prepare to spend more for tipping, never ever take photo with them after the show. I saw they asked for 200 baht per person. In case there are 3 of them taking photo together with you, you need to fork out 200.- x 3.

DAY 2 (cloudy and light shower)
Itinerary :
* half day tour in the 1st half (1100 baht)
* walk around the beach in the 2nd half
* Phuket FantaSea with dinner at night (1800 baht)

 Elephant trekking
* If possible, please avoid this as I really feel pity to them. I have an impression that they are ill-treated by their 'driver'. Some use a sharp tool to knock on the elephant skull to control them.

Monkey show. Smart creature.

Snake show. Deadly kiss.

Visit the Big Buddha Temple.

Visit Wat Chalong (a temple with two sacred monk whose has saved Phuket Island from the intruders long time ago)

Walked slowly to Patong Beach after we returned from our half day city tour.

No plan to go anywhere but thinking of chilling out and watching football match? There are many pubs along the streets in Patong. You won't be lonely as some of the bars are always full, e.g: Aussie Bars.

Patong beach.

Many stalls selling local delicacies.

Phuket FantaSea (with buffet dinner) starts about 6pm plus.

Canoeing at Hong Island.

Back to our boat after canoeing. Canoe by local. * Please get ready small change as your tour guide may asked for your generousity to give the canoe man some tips

Finally we are here. James Bond Island.
Amazing earth power. I believe something happened some time ago. The hill was cleanly 'cut' into half.

Snorkelling at Pileh Lagoon

My room mate feeding fish with Oreo.

Instead of snorkelling, we just enjoyed the nice scenery and taking photos.

Lastly, Khai Island.

 Rocks formation. #1

Rocks formation on the beach line. #2

Again, back to banzaan for dinner.

DAY 5: (raining heavily from day to night)

 Metal Art. Take 2.
 Metal Art. Take 3.
 Metal Art. Take 4.
At ground floor of Jungceylon, it's like our central market; selling wide varieties of local products.

Blink-blink.....make a great souvenir.

Steam grouper and white tomyam soup for dinner. Ah?! my tomyam soup photo is missing.

DAY 6 : flight return to MYS in the early morning.

Andrew helped us on arranging transport to airport. Taxi fee is 600.-  We heard from our driver that many tourist missed their flight the day before due to the heavy rain. Many roads were flooded and cars could not enter that area for pick up.

* For those who wants to buy Bangkok Bag, you may buy it at airport Duty Free shop as the cost is much lower than those sell in the mall (some even cheaper by half). However, the variety maybe lesser compare to outside.
